Basal Metabolism

 Basal Metabolism

Energy, as heat, is produced as the product of metabolic activity of a cell. This energy is essential for survival of an organism. This energy production may vary according to the needs of cell and factors affecting the metabolism and may show a diurnal variation. However under certain conditions, called Basal conditions, it remains fairly constant.

Definition

Basal metabolism is the metabolism observed under basal conditions.

Basal conditions- These are as follows-

1.     person should be awake, preferably lying on bed after a good night’s sleep

2.     Person should be in a state of complete physical and mental rest

3.     Person should be in post absorptive phase i.e. 12 hours after the last meal

4.     Person should be in optimal environmental conditions i.e. normal room temperature, pressure and humidity.
