Types of metabolism
Metabolic reactions as a group may be categorized as
·
Catabolism- It is the breaking
down of compounds (Lyses) for example, the breaking down of glucose
to pyruvate by cellular respiration
·
Anabolism–It is the formation (synthesis) of compounds such as
proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids.
- ·
Amphibolism-The term
Amphibolism is sometimes used for reactions which are both catabolic and anabolic
in nature.
These enzyme-catalyzed reactions
allow organisms to grow and reproduce, maintain their structures, and respond
to their environments. Usually, catabolism releases energy, and anabolism
consumes energy. So during metabolism larger molecules are broken down into
smaller molecules with production of energy or small molecule join to form
larger molecules to form various structures.
