Sources of fats in human body

Sources of fats in human body

The depot fats may be derived from following sources-

1.     Food fat-This is the chief source.

2.     Carbohydrates-Carbohydrates can be converted to fats. During this conversion because an oxygen rich substance (carbohydrate) being transformed into oxygen poor substance (fats), so R.Q. rises. Fats formed from carbohydrates are more saturated and a higher melting point.

3.     Proteins-Fats can be derived from proteins may be converted into fats. Pyridoxine along with, thiamine, catalyzes the formation of fats from proteins.

Functions of human fats

1.     Mechanical functions. (a) While remaining under the surface, 1t gives shape to the limbs and body. (b) Remaining around the viscera it keeps them in position and acts as a mechanical buffer against injury.

2.     Physical functions. Fat being a non-conductor of beat, the subcutaneous fat plays a good part in the regulation of body temperature.

3.     Chemical functions. It represents stored energy. Energy in large amounts can be stored as adipose tissue fat in concentrated water-less state. I gm of fat gives 9.3 Calories. Since fats constitute about 12% of body weight, it means stored energy of 1,100 Calories per kg of body weight.
