Choline
Chemistry
and sources
It was first isolated
by Stracker in 1849 from body fluids. It is a component of lecithin,
sphingomyelin, acetylcholine, etc.
Sources
Butter, nervous tissue,
yolk of egg are very rich sources.
Synthesis
It can be easily synthesized
in the human body from methionine and ethanolamine.
Functions
of choline
1. Lipotropic action- choline prevents the deposition of fats and
accelerates the rate of removal of fat from the liver. It accelerates the rate
of phospholipid formation and mobilization of fat.
2. Synthetic functions- It takes part in synthesis of Lecithin,
Sphyngomyelin and acetylcholine. First two are phospholipids.
